Assignment 2 Self-Portrait

I've lived in Westbury practically my whole life. I have one sister and my parents are still happily married. We're all reasonably close and have fun together. I also have 2 cats who I love very much but who don't love each other. My boyfriend and I have been together for  almost 2 years now. He's my other half. If our friends or family see one of us, they assume the others not too far.  We met at the ambulance corp we volunteer at. We're both EMTs and spend 2-3 nights a week there. I love food. I almost always have food with me. I love to watch movies and some tv shows, mainly because they take my mind off of everything else. I like to read but usually don't have time to do it, especially during the school year. I'm insecure about how I look and always want to lose weight. I'm pretty happy with who I am though. I wish I knew exactly what I want to do with my life. I know I love photography though. I'm always late and usually tired.  I'm known by my friends as the one most likely to doze off in class. I love my freckles and my hair most. I miss my dog and grandparents every moment. I'm caring, funny and a good friend. I like to go on random adventures.

Writing assignment 1

One of the most common subjects in all art history is people. The reason for this is because its so easy to convey human emotions because everyone has most likely felt something similar in their life. While we all can connect to works of art emotionally, its also interesting to document other people because we are all so different. We all come in different shapes and sizes. We also have different interests and likes and dislikes. To photograph man is to document life as its happening, No two individuals are ever exactly the same person.

Portrait artists main goal is to make a successful and intriguing piece of artwork based on their subject. Some artists really try to create a very realistic view of the person, trying to depict how they look, possibly where they come from, and other qualities of the person they want to get across. They convey this all while attempting keeping their artistic style within the painting, photograph, or whatever at form their work is. Others just think about how people will see their work, and make the work what they want it to be, whether it is the person within their true form or not. In general though, Portrait artists are trying to depict life as we know it.

Photographic portraits are definitely one of the quickest portraits. With the push of a button and the sound of a shutter you've just caught the identity of a person and their emotions on film (or an SD card in some cases).  Other medias take time to complete, although i feel they have more freedom because they start with a blank canvas and can do anything. Who you want to photograph as a portraitist has to exist or you make them exist. This allows for pictures of people in their truest and raw form. Painters, and other hands on medias, without even helping it most likely put their individual spin and style on the subject. I think photographic portraits are also more visually intriguing because you see the acutual person, not a depiction of them.

First Assignment

This is my first blog ever. Let me tell you, they're not exactly hard to figure out but it was a process.

One of the first pictures I chose to show as a portrait I like is of a dancers, Cyd Charisse. The portrait is by Richard Avedon. I really like this portrait because the composition . It keeps your eye moving but you have to focus on her because of the white background. I also like the range of value because you can still see detail in her black dress while the part flowing off behind her fade into the white.

The next photo want to show is by Dan Winters of his son Dylan. I like this photo because of the lighting as well as the subject. It seems dramatic but still has the boyish charm of his name being written on his stomach in typical child's handwriting. I think its unique because of his pose. Its not very childlike but more tense.

The last photograph I like is by Irving Penn. The picture is called Cuzco Children. They are from Peru. The picture is interesting to me because its an unnatural sight of kids dressed and acting as if they are adults. Its a good portrait because you get some sense of who they are, for example, because of their clothes they don't look to wealthy.

The next few picture I'm posting are taken by me. Hope you like them :)
